I have spent well over a year without proper internet. That is, no router, no wifi. I have been relying solely on the data I can get through my very temperamental mobile phone. We did consider getting a router installed, and decided against it as a point of principle. The reason being we were living too much of our life online and not enought outside it. For me, especially having such an unreliable mobile phone, it definitely proved to be a good move. I took up activities which I had not done for ages, such as knitting, crochetting or painting. We have had plenty of outdoor activities, be it walks in the Pentland Hills, Arthur’s Seat, down the Union Canal or the Water of Leith.
However, we are heading back online again. In a way it’s a step backwards, but with our families in different countries Skype has proved to be vital, and it’s just getting tiring relying on the mobile for every sort of Internet communication, from email to blog-updating!
While we’re waiting for our router and after a move where we found out we had way more than we thought we had (I guess it’s always like that… maybe?) we have rediscovered the joys of Netflix. I still have my mixed feelings about virtual things, but I guess if it’s streaming I can live with that. Also, we found Chasing Ice on it, which I’d been looking out for. I would definitely recommend it, whether you believe in climate change or not.
